Le Lerd Thai restaurant, Leichhardt

29 Jun

A massive thank you to Ricky Chong from Food Morning for inviting me to dine as a guest of Le Lerd Thai restaurant to pre-sample their flavour packed 3 course deal for 2 people for $45.

As soon as we entered the restaurant we were impressed with the hot pink and brown colour scheme, the décor, the murals painted in silver on the wall and the ambience of the restaurant. We were welcomed by Jonathan, the owner of Le Lerd who was friendly and made suggestions so we could sample more of the menu.

For entrée we shared the scallops in light red curry and the mixed entrée, which included one spring roll, curry puff, Thai fish cake, chicken satay skewer and crumbed crab claw.

The scallops in light red curry were full of flavour. The thai fish cake and chicken satay skewer were my favourite entrée. The chicken satay skewer was a nice size, although I would have loved more satay sauce, perhaps because I’m hooked on satay. :) The mixed entrée came with a sweet plum sauce and a sweet chilli sauce. The deal includes a choice of 2 entrees from the menu. Other options include Fried marinated chicken wings, grilled lamb cutlets, salt & pepper and garlic calamari, grilled marinated tiger prawns, veg spring rolls and fried silken tofu.

It’s a tough choice which was my favourite main since they were both fantastic. We ordered the chicken with chilli jam and cashew nut stir fry, which was made hotter at our request and boy did it pack a punch. It was packed full of vegetables as well. The cashews were a nice textural contrast.

The Chu Chee Curry fish was a flavour explosion too. This was Brett’s favourite dish. The fish was delicate but held it’s shape and the Chu Chee curry was smooth and delicious. The thin strips of Kafir lime leaves reminded me of my Thai cooking lesson in Koh Samui a few years ago. The curry came with a few vegetables but not as much as the chicken stir fry. Both mains were served with rice. The deal included a choice of 2 mains from a massive selection of chicken, pork, beef, roast duck, prawns, fish , seafood, tofu and vegetables either in a stir-fry or as a curry. There was also the choice of noodles, soup, salads and a selection from the grill.

We were so full at this stage but of course we had room for dessert. Two traditional Thai desserts were the perfect size after such generous servings for main course. Sago and corn with coconut milk and black sticky rice with palm sugar syrup and coconut milk. Both desserts were warm and tasted lovely but I thought perhaps needed more palm sugar syrup.

The deal also included 2 glasses of wine, which makes this deal even better value.

Jonathan has owned Le Lerd for a year now and his father in law hand painted the murals on the walls. They have a facebook page for the restaurant that has more pictures of some of the other delicious food they offer.

This is a fantastic restaurant. The food is of a high quality and reminded me of the food we ate in Thailand. It was packed full of flavour and the servings were generously sized. It’s a shame I don’t live closer to Leichhardt to eat here more often. I will definitely buy one of these deals and go back again. I look forward to trying some of the other dishes and of course more of their chicken satay. Yum!

You can buy this deal here. Be quick it is only for a limited time.

Quay Restaurant, Sydney

09 Sep

Last week was my  birthday so my husband treated me to a fancy schmancy dinner at Quay which I was very excited about, especially after seeing Peter Gilmore on Masterchef a few months ago and watching the finalists make that crazy snow egg. When we booked ages ago I checked out the menu online but the only thing I could remember was the 8 texture chocolate cake and rightly so. OMG it was AMAZING!!!

We had a really nice table with a view of both the harbour bridge and the opera house. The service was perfect, the wine flowed and there was also fireworks which made it seem like a big celebration. The mood lighting resulted in a few of my photos not being that great but I think they still make an awesome food diary. The photos I took with my iPhone actually turned out better than the pics from my camera. I love my iPhone! Oh and there was heaps of people taking photos of their food so I didn’t feel weird or embarrassed at all. Phew!

The amuse bouche was sashimi of tuna with eggplant cream and dashi snow.

Mud crab congee. Hand shelled mud crab, palm hearts, Chinese inspired split rice porridge

The sea pearls. From left to right crab, smoked eel, sea scallop and tuna.

Gentle braise of pearl oyster, rock lobster, shaved squid, lettuce hearts, tapioca, lobster velvet, oyster cream, wasabi flowers

Roasted wild snapper, smoked butter, celeriac cream, young greens, winter melon, vongole juices.

Brett’s cocktail: I can’t remember exactly what it was. Some kind of sour cherry vodka I think. It was nice enough that he had two.

Jackfruit snow egg & the gooey custardy meringue goodness oozing out. Mmmmmmmm

Eight texture chocolate cake featuring Amedei Chocolate. The waitress poured the hot chocolate sauce over the cake at the table and Brett was quick to ask for an extra pour of the sauce. Good one babe!

I was happy with each of my choices and overall I think each dish was very nice and delicate, although slightly small servings. I ate 3 pieces of bread to compensate which I don’t normally do, but it was delicious bread. Definitely an awesome experience and a great way to celebrate my birthday.

Flying Fish, Pyrmont

02 Jun

To celebrate life before kids (LBK), my husband, who going forth I am going to refer to as schmoopie, treated me to a long lunch at Flying Fish. Having heard a few good reviews of this place and seeing Peter Kuruvita on Masterchef recently, we woke up on Sunday morning and decided we should try it out.

On Saturday afternoon I met heaps of other food obsessed crazy people, aka food bloggers, so I was inspired to take some photos and blog about the experience.

We decided on the tasting menu ($110) plus matching wines ($50) so by the end of the afternoon I was feeling pretty good. Luckily they let me keep the menu, otherwise I doubt I would have remembered every course and matching wine. Since a wine tasting thing I went to at the Taste of Sydney festival a few months ago I have developed a new interest in trying different wines so this made the afternoon even more fun.

The canapé was a pacific oyster with vinaigrette that I’ve forgotten the name of. I’m not too keen on oysters but schmoopie said they were nice. We didn’t take a photo of the oysters. I was served an amuse bouche that was very nice. This course wasn’t meant to a have a matching wine but we graciously accepted the glass of bubbly that was offered. What a great way to kick start our appetite.

The next course was seared yellow fin tuna with ruby red grapefruit and sweet pork crackling. This was so fresh and tasted amazing. I think it is their signature dish. It was served with a palm sugar and pepper caramel sauce and underneath the tuna was a thin slice of pork. I don’t normally eat pork but I was feeling adventurous and it reminded me of eating Chinese on Mother’s Day when I was a kid. The combination of flavours was delicate and nice. The tuna was matched with a 2008 Eastern Peake Pinot Tache from Ballarat which was a Rose.

This was followed by Smoked rainbow trout served on Himalayan salt, fennel cream, celery heart salad. The presentation of this course was unlike anything I have seen before. Apparently they got these blocks of salt from the Himalaya’s and bacteria can’t grow on them so they are reused. The trout was not seasoned so we rolled each piece out onto the salt block to absorb salt. This was fun and interesting. It didn’t make it overly salty which is good coz I don’t normally add much salt when I’m cooking. The fennel cream was light and airy and not overly licoricy. Is that a word? Well it didn’t taste like licorice which was also good. I’m not sure what a celery heart is but I think it was the baby celery leaves.

The trout was matched with a glass of 2008 Salomon Undhof “Wein & Berg” Gruner Veltliner from Kremstal, Austria which was served in the MASSIVEST glass I’ve ever drunk out of. 3 Cheers for LBK!

The white scallops with boudin noir, carrot puree, grape and pine nut dressing was next. I soon discovered that boudin noir is black pudding. The scallops are sitting on a tiny piece of it. Now I’ve heard of this before and I know it’s from Scotland and is something like sheep’s stomach or something equally as gross but I tried not to think about it and focused on just being on a little adventure. Sometime’s ignorance is bliss. These scallops were amazing. Perfectly cooked and each element of this dish was a taste sensation. It was matched with another glass of red. This time in a slightly smaller glass. It as a 2008 Tarras Vineyards Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand.

Pan roasted blue eye with scallop mousse, white beans, pumpkin puree and braised chicken.

Mushroom-infused White Pyrenees lamb loin with fondant potato, braised shoulder and black garlic

We were offered a choice of either Blue Eye or Lamb for our main. I chose the Blue Eye and schmoopie had the lamb. They were served with hand cut chips which were nice and fat and a simple salad. My matching wine was the 2007 Pratello Marzemino from Lombardy, Italy. Schmoopie’s lamb was matched with the 2001 Tour du Haut Moullin Cru Bourgeois Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot from Haut-Medoc, France. Boy that was a mouthful!

And the best part of any meal….dessert. I was sooooo excited that it wasn’t just one dessert but a dessert platter. AWESOME!!! From left to right was a Chestnut soufflé with orange, honeycomb and gingerbread ice cream (in the spoon at the back), Lemon curd with vanilla mousse, blackberry, almond and elderflower sorbet and Italian Amedei chocolate delice with pecans, champagne and raspberry sorbet. This was all matched with a 2007 Stellenrust ‘Chenin d’Musact’ Chenin Blanc, Muscat from Stellenbosch, South Africa. OMG This was the best way to finish the meal. I savoured every single bite which meant the sorbet’s all melted. I don’t think my descriptions of the food is anything like how the Masterchef contestants describe food but this was all bloody fantastic. The soufflé was fluffy, the lemon curd was just like an amazing lemon meringue pie and the chocolate delice satisfied my chocolate needs totally.

But wait there’s more…..

A hot chocolate and petit fours, which I’d already taken a bite of the 3 from the right, were nice too. I can’t remember exactly what each one was but I think the white dessert, 2nd from the left was a marshmallow and the red dessert 2nd from the right was a jelly and the one on the far right was a cake.

Wow! Thanks schmoopie for a wonderful afternoon. I am loving LBK!

The tasting menu was absolutely fantastic and such a great way to try so many different dishes. I definitely want to go back to Flying Fish again. Next time I will pre-order the mud crab and try some prawns and soft shell crab and the kingfish curry. Oh boy so many choices. I think I will have to go back a few times.

Wedding Food

27 May

I recently got married (in December) and have been meaning to blog about the amazing food but it’s been a busy year. So here it is finally. Our reception was at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Point Piper and the catering was done absolutely perfect by Zest. I can highly recommend the team at Zest. Their attention to detail and thoughtfulness ensured a truly memorable night that complemented the day so perfectly. Each course was amazing, especially the desserts which was a highlight for me. We decided to go with roving desserts, which were mini high tea size desserts. This meant everyone got to try 4 different types of desserts. Awesome!

The photos of the canapés and entrée were taken by a professional photographer but since they left after the entrée the photos of the mains and desserts were taken by my lovely sister. Thanks Tinx. You can probably tell the difference but I’m just so glad we got photos of all the food. They bring back so many nice memories.

To start we had roving canapés.

clip_image002

The cornet of beetroot salad with goats curd and baby herbs was a great start. I was warned to be careful so I wouldn’t stain my dress with beetroot.

clip_image004

The Scallop shot with citrus and sake was a taste sensation. This was my favourite canapé. So fresh and fun.

clip_image006

The crispy soft shell crab with lime aioli was extremely morish. I could have eaten the whole platter.

clip_image008

To satisfy my husband’s love for meat he chose the spring rolls with beef fillet and shiitake mushrooms and he claims “they were exquisite. So tender and tasty.”

clip_image010

For entrée everyone had Peeled Crystal Bay prawns with crab and cucumber salad, tomato vinaigrette. There was also a vegetarian option but I didn’t see what it was or get a photo of it.

clip_image012

We had alternating mains. My choice was the roasted Atlantic salmon, Kipfler potato, asparagus spears, citrus salad, orange glaze. It was nice and light and refreshing.

clip_image014

Even though I don’t eat red meat my husband does and he chose the slow roasted grain fed lamb rump, snow peas, kumera puree, tzatziki, pomegranate and molasses jus. There was also a vegetarian option but alas I didn’t get a photo or even see this. I was too caught up in our food and catching up with everyone.

clip_image016

After our first dance, the Bolero, a fun version of “Jai-Ho” and more dancing it was time for the dessert canapés. Our waiter lined up one of each at our table. They were so cute. My favourite was the chocolate delice. Apparently the pastry chef taught Eamon Sullivan to make it for Celebrity Masterchef last year. Although he didn’t make it in a shot glass. I’m pretty sure I had a few of these. They were just so good and after being so healthy in the lead up to the wedding I thought I deserved it.

clip_image018

The lemon meringue tartlets were perfect. Just the right balance of pastry, tangy lemon and meringue. Mmmmmm

clip_image020

I don’t remember the French lavender and blood orange creme caramel. Probably coz I was gorging myself on chocolate delice’s.

clip_image022

And lastly the mini pavlovas with mascarpone, strawberries and passionfruit coulis were incredible. Just the right size but I wish I was more hungry.

So there you have it my long awaited return to blogging. I have still been cooking and have a back log of recipes and daring bakers challenges to post. Hopefully with school holidays coming up in just over 4 weeks I’ll get back into it. Looking forward to meeting a whole bunch of Sydney food bloggers this weekend.
